So, you’ve been invited to a formal dinner party. Not only do you worry about what you should wear, you are not sure which utensil goes where or is used for what. Ahhhhhhhhhhhh!
Don’t worry, you’re not alone. Let’s face it, everyday life doesn’t normally afford us the opportunity for formal dining. Here are some tips for formal dinner party dining – whether you are setting the table or eating at it…
Always remember to start from the outside and work your way in. That fact makes it easy because as courses are served, you simply use the next utensil in line! The fork and knife closest to the plate are used for your main course. Forks are on the left. Your salad fork is first. The dinner fork is beside the plate. On the right of the plate, you may find a knife, then an appetizer or salad knife, a spoon, soup spoon (which is larger and bowl or oval shaped) and an oyster fork. The knife blade faces the plate. A dessert fork or spoon would be placed parallel to the edge of the table near the top of the plate.
All of this flatware mentioned may not be included. For instance, if oysters are not served, you will not see or use an oyster fork. Also remember that after using each utensil, you should place it on your plate. It should not go back on the table. If all else fails, just watch others around you and follow their lead – not boisterous Uncle Bob…preferably dainty Aunt Donna.
Bottom line is it’s really not that hard, and once you do it a few times, it will become easy as pie. So put a fork in those negative thoughts, and text that affirmative RSVP with confidence!
