Many people will confess that there is nothing more important to them than their coffee first thing in the morning. So why not make yours the best it can be? Did you know that you can get the most out of your coffee by grinding it at home?
There are some wonderful perks to grinding your own coffee. Freshly ground coffee beans retain their flavor, potency and antioxidants, so it gives you a burst of flavor that you just can’t get with store bought ground coffee. Freshly ground coffee is more aromatic and – believe it or not – is even healthier for you. It is also proven to keep stomach acid at a minimum.
Here’s how it works. Coffee beans are encased in their own protective “shell” – a package designed by nature, so your coffee remains completely fresh and safe until it is ground. However, if you buy pre-ground coffee, a lot can happen before you get that type of coffee into your pot. Coffee oils are delicate, and can easily fall prey to contamination, so odors can taint and affect the smell and taste of coffee once it is ground.
Additionally, coffee oils are water-soluble, so when ground coffee is exposed to moisture, the oils within it are quickly diluted. Carbon Dioxide works the essential coffee oils into the coffee once they are released. Within 60 seconds of grinding, 80 percent of this gas is released into the air and dissipated, and coffee actually loses 60 percent of its aroma within 15 minutes after it is ground!
And if you are of the camp that thinks it’s just too much hassle to grind your own coffee, think again. It’s easier to grind fresh coffee beans than you may think. It takes less than one minute to grind enough beans for a cup of coffee with a standard handheld grinder, and…if you use a mechanical grinder, you don’t even need to do a thing!
