Stainless steel cookware is beautiful. Here’s how to keep it that way…
The first thing you want to do with your stainless steel cookware is to season it. Seasoning will help to keep foods from sticking, resulting in easier cleaning.
Here we go! Heat the pan and add about a tablespoon of oil to it. Cook on medium-high heat until the oil begins to smoke. Cool the pan, pour off oil and then wipe off excess with a paper towel. It’s a simple concept really. Stainless expands when it is heated so oil can become embedded.
As long as you don’t wash it with dish soap, the new non-stick surface you created should last you a while. Season it again when it begins to turn yellow.
To wash, just rinse in hot water and use a paper towel to remove excess grease. Dry by hand. If stainless steel cookware dries by air, water spots can form. Don’t use the dishwasher if you want your stainless steel cookware to last a long time.
Now let’s get messy. Got a mess in your pan that doesn’t come out with a simple rinse and wipe? Soak a few hours in hot water. Use the scouring pad side of your sponge. Steel wool will scratch.
Leave your stainless steel pot on the burner too long? Rub baking soda onto the cool, dry pan. If that doesn’t work to your satisfaction, try Bar Keeper’s Friend. You can also cook away burn marks by adding just enough water to cover the burn and a little salt. Bring to a boil and then turn off heat. Let that sit for a few hours and then dump it and scrub.
Club soda is great for water spots. Just swish it around in the pan, rinse and wipe dry; or soak in white vinegar and then clean as usual.
